Synopsis:
The story is a period piece that opens around 1874. The entire plot occurs in a château in France near the city of Grenoble. It opens as a diary entry of Cecilia Natashia Dupuin, a recent graduate of Madame Ségolène’s school for girls. As an orphan, Cecilia’s life began in a convent under the care of nuns, but by the age of five she was sponsored by an unknown donor and was sent to a finishing school to obtain training for a career. The novel opens on the next day of graduation from her finishing school. The diary scenes are written from Cecilia’s point of view, yet the novel includes the background stories of other characters residing within the château. Through Cecilia’s dictation the readers are introduced to the inhabitants of the old French castle, which include an elderly mortal matriarch, her female vampire lover and a mixture of both mortal and immortal vampire servants. The reader is given a glimpse into an early romance that took place in the 1600’s, as well as a volatile relationship that began in the late 1700’s. What ensues is a retelling of a classic Gothic tale that is filled with mystery, terror and romance.
