Synopsis:

Gustie, haunted by a secret sorrow, comes to Charity, South Dakota to escape the constraints of family and society in turn-of-the-century Philadelphia and gains only nominal acceptance as a school teacher. Her one friend in Charity, Lena, is beset by troubles of her own, not the least of which is a hard drinking husband charged with murder. But the world outside Charity includes the Red Sand Reservation, where Gustie finds a new family in an old Dakotah medicine woman, Dorcas Manyroads, and her granddaughter Jordis.  As Gustie deepens her relationship with Jordis, they both become entangled in Lena’s search for a killer and together, the three unlikely friends uncover past horrors that erupt in fresh tragedy for them all.
